Big TV Reaches Mount Everest

Big TV service at Mount Everest Reliance has gone where no DTH service provider has dared to go, not out of space but the company recently started servicing the base camp of Mount Everest at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), situated 15,317feet above sea level at Dropadi ka Danda.

According to the company a team of 24 members braved snowstorms and temperatures reaching 3 degrees to trek from Uttarkashi to the base camp from the 26th to the 30th of November.

Big TV has a 300 member installation team in North India that have been trained to access the mountainous region to set up their DTH service there.

Mahesh Prasad, president, Reliance Communication, said, "Big TV holds the biggest market share in both Uttarakhand (also known as Uttaranchal) and Himachal Preadesh. On an all-India basis, Big TV has achieved one million subscribers within 90 days of its launch, to become the fastest-growing DTH service in India."

Big TV acquired 44% of the market share in Himachal Pradesh in less than the 90 days since it entered the mountainous state. The company has also got hold of 60% of the market share in the remote areas of Rohru, Kotkhai, Karsog, Nadaun and Palampur.

Big TV's One Antenna, Multiple Connection Service

Big TV's multi-dwelling unit, one antenna many connections Big TV is making rapid strides in the DTH market with continuous innovation. Reliance is now going to provide Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU) installation service, a customised DTH service, where a single dish antenna can provide DTH connection to multiple households.

Hence every household need not install individual dish antennas, as the individual set-top boxes will be linked to a large dish antenna. The Multi-Dwelling Units is primarily targeting group volumes in residential societies, commercial buildings, new township, business parks, etc.

The MDU dish size varies between 90 cms and 120 cms, depending on the number of households it services. Reliance will incur the cost of the hardware and also offer one STB to each household. The option to choose their own channel package including the free regional pack will be available.

This move can get Big TV more subscribers as many residential complexes don't like to have too many dish antennas placed on balconies. Big TV holds 15% of the market share after surpassing 1 million subscriber mark within 3 months of its launch.

Big TV has set-up a network of 350 Direct Sales Agents (DSAs) and 500 member installation team to handle MDU business across India. MDUs have already been installed at over 1500 locations, and the installation process is underway at nearly 4000 locations.

Recently the government announced reduction of Cenvat from 14% to 10%, giving some respite to the DTH players who have been planning to increase the price of their services due to the weakening rupee. However, it remains to be seen if this will affect the cost of STBs.

Big TV Expected to Hike DTH Price

Reliace Big tv increase price set top box The global economic crisis is expected to hit DTH segment, with all DTH operators, including Reliance Big TV, planning to hike their prices.

The South market will be the first to witness the price rise, since the change in price is expected to have little impact on the spiralling demand.

South is a major market for Big TV, as nearly 50% of the subscribers are based there, and overall South accounts for 35% of the DTH market. The weakening rupee is increasing the cost of importing set-top boxes.

But as newer players entered the market, lot of operators slashed the set-top box prices and subscription rates, but that will change soon.

Recently, Big TV also announced series of new movie releases for its 32 pay-per-view (PPV) channels in English, Hindi and regional languages. In English movies, Big TV is offering subscribers movies like Black Hawk Down, Peggie Sue Got Married, The Rundown, The Way We Were, SWAT, Anger Management, Midnight Express, Bite The Bullet, Short Circuit 2 and Frankenstein.

While the Hindi line-up includes 20 films like Aap Ka Saroor, Mast, Chalte Chalte, Aetbaar, Keemat, Goal, China Gate, Sultanat, Anubhav and Shaadi Ke Baad. In regional category, Kannada films like ‘Amruthavarshini’ and ‘A’ can be viewed on the pay-per-view channels.

Under pay-per-view services, Big TV offers 10 Hindi and 10 regional flicks monthly to its subscribers. English movies are priced for Rs 50 per month while regional is priced at Rs 60 per film. The movie library is updated every fortnight.

Big TV Races Ahead, Crosses 1 Million Users

Big TV races ahead, touch one million users Reliance Big TV claims to have surpassed 1 million subscriber mark within 3 months of its launch, with this Big TV holds 15 percent of the market share. This announcement comes a month after Big TV touched five lakh subscribers.

Recently Dish TV reached 4.5 million customers, thereby capturing 53 percent of the market share. So this segment, which is expected to grow upto 10-12 million customers by November 2009, is certainly gathering momentum.

Mahesh Prasad, President, Reliance Communications, said that Big TV is expected to breakeven within the first five years and is on target to achieve the 40% market share to become a leading player by 2011.

"Our customer-centric approach coupled with advanced technology, superior product and service with a wide distribution and installation service network spanning the country has helped BIG TV cross the million milestone in such a short span of time," stated Prasad.

However, the global economic situation and the depreciating rupee is putting pressure on margins for import of set top boxes so the company is looking at all options, including price rise and packaging to tackle the situation.

Big TV recently announced massive retail expansion to push its service among the masses. Its recharge vouchers (RCVs) will be available in around 75,000 outlets across 10,000 towns inlcuding grocery and utility stores.

Big TV CEO Resigns in 4 Months

Arun Kapoor Big Tv CEO quits Reliance ADAG is already undergoing a major change at the helm, just a month after crossing five million subscribers in short span of time.

Arun Kapoor, has quit from his position as CEO and President after being appointed in July 2008.

The reason for Kapoor's decision is not known. It comes as a surprise, considering that Kapoor had announced long-term plans for the company.

At present, Mahesh Prasad is the acting president of Reliance Big TV. Prasad, who had been with Big TV since its inception, was the President, applications, solutions and content group, Reliance Communications.

Prior to Big TV, Kapoor was the CEO with its rival Dish TV since 2006. Then he joined Reliance as COO after which he was made the CEO, and in four months he resigned to join Dish TV again. As competition is rapidly expanding in the DTH market, how will this move affect Big TV?

Big TV Reaches 5 lakh Subscribers, Targets 5 Million

Arun Kapoor and Sanjay Behl Big tv 5 lakh mark Just days after slashing prices of Big TV service, the company announced that it has touched five lakh subscribers within two months of its launch. South India has proved to be a major market for Big TV, with nearly 50% subscribers accounting from that market.

Reliance ADAG expects to touch the five million mark in the first year of its operations, and is geared to to add over 400,000 subscribers every month with an on-ground infrastructure spanning 6500 towns.

But with exceeding amount of consumer complaints which we have received on this blog, about the installation, after-sales service etc. of Big TV, we really doubt if these figures are for real or just a marketing strategy to nail the competitors.

According to Arun Kapoor, president, Reliance BIG TV, Big TV’s half-million subscriber base is equivalent to 40% of the industry’s gross additions during the last two months.

Big TV sure has big plans in the offing. It already offers the most number of channels as compared to any other DTH player, and by next year it plans to double its channels bouquet to 400. Reliance has also tied up with LG to offer its DTH service at Rs 700, instead of Rs 1490, for those customers who buy 29-inch television sets. The offer is valid till end of this month.

Also in the pipeline is Big TV's digital video recorder (DVR) by end of this year, and interactive cricket and news service within two months in association with a leading sports broadcaster and two news channels.

Big TV Pulls a Spoof on Airtel Digital TV

DTH war between Big TV and Airtel Digital TVEven before Bharti Airtel's Digital TV is launched in the market, slated on October 9th, Big TV has gone one up in this DTH rivalry. Airtel Digital TV has been running a teaser ad campaign prior to its launch for the past week.

The 12-second commercial shows animated characters dancing around and suddenly a sofa appears and the characters end with the punchline, "See you at home." It doesn't say anything else or indicate that its Airtel Digital TV ad. But Big TV guessed it right, and spoofed the ad.

Reliance ADAG used the same set up and punchline "See you at home," the only difference being that the ad showed Big TV logo and its features of 32 cinemas and 200+ channels. The viewers thought that this ad belonged to Big TV. You can watch the Airtel Digital TV teaser ad.

Big TV also noted that Airtel had no copyright claims since the teaser ads ran with no brand logo or name. Clearly the marketing war has begun. With Reliance aiming to capture 40% of the market share, don't be surprised to see few more spoofs.

India has an estimated seven million paying DTH customers and this is expected to grow to 25 million by 2012, as per estimates by FICCI.

The DTH Price Wars have Begun

The cost of DTH in IndiaThe increasing amount of DTH providers in the country and with new ones coming in, each one of them is trying to woo a customer data base, what better way to win over a customer by providing a cheap service.

Low price services are the mantra with Dish TV, Big TV and Tata Sky, lets take a look at what value these DTH players are offering you for your money. But are these offers good enough to lure you from your local cable operators lets take a look and see.

A few months ago and the average monthly outgoing was around Rs 280 to 300 that included the cost of the required hardware and a monthly subscription fee. But today the average a customer shells out is lesser by 30 - 40% where you can pay anywhere between Rs 182 - 249, which equals to less than the Rs. 300 you are paying to your cable operator

Tata sky started a Rs.99 entry level subscription that got the largest DTH player in the market Dish TV to offer 125 channels for Rs. 100 in a month, but the cause for these operators to lower their prices is due to the launch of Reliance ADAG's DTH serivce, BIG TV at a price of Rs 100 with 44 free to air channels.

But now Tata Sky is taking it a notch further with its aim to enter a larger section of the Hindi spolen markets with its Rs.99 per month super hit pack. As their chief marketing officer puts it, "Tata Sky stands for a premium DTH service. Perhaps, because of this impression, a number of potential subscribers were finding us a little expensive. Now the Rs 99 super hit pack will help us get these very subscribers."

So if you want to go DTH, Dish TV's DTH connection will cost Rs 2,190 one time an average of Rs 182 per month and receive 12 months of subscription of 125 channels that include entertainment channels, movie channels, sports channels and others. A Tata Sky connection, a consumer needs to pay Rs 2,999 an average of Rs 249 and for 12 months, for 53 channels including pay channels like Star Plus, Sony TV and active services.

Big TV is also offering entry-level subscriptions at Rs 2,490 that includes various channel packages, to get a clearer understanding between these competitors take a look at a comparison of Tata Sky, Dish TV and Big TV.

Reliance and Thomson Tie-up for 300 HD Channels

Reliance and Thomson Tie-up Reliance Big TV has tied up with Thomson, a provider of video solutions, to launch 300 high-definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) channels and 30 radio channels in India later this year.

Big Tv will use the complete head end system from Thomson to launch the HD service and manage a hybrid distribution network of satellite direct to home (DTH) and IPTV over broadband.

With this, Reliance is expected to optimize its distribution network to launch a large number of channels, ensure excellent quality of service, and reach more viewers. Thomson head end will manage both DTH and IPTV platforms simultaneously and transparently.

Arun Kapoor, chief executive officer, Reliance BIG TV, said, "This is an ambitious project and launching such a large bouquet of channels, including HD channels, over a dual-distribution network is a challenging proposition which Reliance Big TV is uniquely qualified to meet. Can I Use One Dish for Many TVs?

Do I need many Dish Antenna to connect many TVs?Well in short the answer is yes, although there is a limit of four TV's per connection, I will explain in short how it works to help you understand better. So lets say you have two televisions at home you do not need to get two separate connections, BIG TV provides a 50% off on installation of 2nd, 3rd and 4th connection.

The way it works is quite simple, you will have one dish that connects to a dual Low Noise Block (LNB) converter. The LNB then has two cables running to two different set top boxes (STB), each connected to your televisions. Each STB will have a different viewing card, which is like a SIM card that we have in mobile phones.
You cannot interchange the viewing cards of the STBs, it is also possible for the company to provide you with two separate dish antennae if the dual LNB is not available.

Two televisionsIf you are taking a multiple Big TV connection you can get a 50% discount by informing the Big TV Customer Care Executive when you place an installation request.

I have Multiple TVs what will be the Monthly Subscription charge?
You will have to pay the normal subscription cost on the first television, if you have two, three or four TVs you would pay 50% or Rs.125 depending on which is higher, per extra TV.

Although if you choose any other add on packs for the second, third or fourth TV you will be charged at a standard price. If you have more than four televisions the 5th TV will require a new connection registered and will cost you the full amount.

Big TV Consumer Woes or Rivals Playing Foul?

Big tv complainsJust within 15 days after their big launch and several consumers have already expressed their disappointment with Big TV customer service. Reliance stated that their call centre was capable of handling over 50,000 calls per day, and would operate from two locations to enable speedy response to consumer queries. But it seems the customer service is not that efficient.

Many complains have been registered about Big TV's after sale service and consumers have received no assistance from the distributor or the call center. Are these genuine complains or just Big Tv's competitor posting negative comments on different sites?

Big Tv Installation woes

We had mentioned in our previous post that there has been some good feedback regarding Big TV installation, but that was few days prior to the launch. Now consumers are facing problems with the installation of the dish within the stipulated time frame as promised by the company, i.e. 48 hours after registration. Even after seven to eight days the dish hasn't been installed and customer service gives no proper response.

We have received several comments from consumers. R Chowdhri, Big TV consumer, complained, "Reliance Big TV has one of the worst customer service I have ever seen in my life. The 1-800 call center no does not work, the installation did not happen even after 6 days of buying the STB and despite me calling the Bombay call center no (022-30338888) multiple times on multiple days, the call center guys are totally inexperienced and just do not have answers to the problem. I recommend people to not buy Big TV. My complaint no is 75103862." This person has pasted the same comment on three different sites with different name, and the same complain number.

Is this a strategy used by Tata Sky or Dish TV to give negative feedback about Big TV? If you have a Big TV connection, send us your feedback on Big TV.

[1] Rep talked to me for over 20 minutes!!!
[2] He was keep asking me (or may be confirming) every single things for 4-5 times what i was telling him (That was really annoying)
[3] After telling him every single thing - he was putting me on hold for 1-2 minutes saying that "i am going to gather more knowledge and will give you a solution, please wait"
[4] In between, he also played a trick - "Sir, are you in front of your TV? is that problem happening right now? If not, please call back when it happens so that we can guide you thoroughly"

I am a bit smart too. I said "hang on --- see, it happens now. tell me what shall i do now?" and he said "try to do something with remote", "try from STB" and even he said some foolish things "check the batteries in your remote"

The user felt like killing the Big TV Customer ServiceFinally, he took a complaint after 20 minutes of discussion and when i asked for a complaint number, he said "i will have to put you on hold for sometimes, it will take time" - i asked "how long" and he said "2-3 minutes"

That was completely waste of time. He actually took 2-3 minutes just to raise a complaint!!!!!!!! Imagine, they haven't launched commercially and they are taking 2-3 minutes just to raise a complaint. What will happen after a launch? He finally gave me an 8 digit complaint number which starts from "7358----"

Big TV Complains:

One customer placed two complains within 24 hours of time, on the 11th of August 2008 hr placed a complain for the STB that was slow and kept hanging, the complain number was 7379**** and on 12th August 2008 another complain fro the "Smart Card Error" and received complain number 7384****. Now if you see that the complain numbers 50,000 complain numbers are being generated on a daily basis. This is really something that will create issues, especially with the launch of Big TV yesterday lets see if these problems are rectified.

Big TV Solutions:

So far the Customer Service nor the Engineers have been able to fix the STB problems, the only solution they have provided is stating that once the service launches they would be able to fix or replace the STB.

The other solution they have provided is to keep the customers phone number stating they will contact them when a new version of the STB is out. So this could mean tha the company is trying to get the STBs replaced for a newer stable version.

A special thanks to the members of the Broadband forum for keeping us updated with the problems they face.

Big TV Launches With Offer of Rs 2490

Big TV DTH launchedThe wait is finally over. Big TV was officially launched today, thereby putting all the speculations to rest. Big TV is priced between Rs 2490 to Rs 4990 (including installation charges), depending on the scheme selected by the customer. The service will be available in over 100,000 outlets across 6,500 towns in the country, including over 2,000 exclusive Reliance branded stores.

With its impending foray, Reliance ADAG intends to become a leading player in the DTH segment within a year, and capture 40% of the market share. It will offer a bouquet of more than 200 channels, and increase it to 330-350 over a period of time. The launch offer comes with 3 months free unlimited access to BIG Cinema, comprising 20 Movie channels and 120 Movies.

Big TV Launch offers:
Here is a comparison between the existing players - Tata Sky and Dish TV - and the newly launched Big TV. Reliance Big TV launch offerSome of the features, not provided by other DTH providers, includes subscription video-on-demand on 50 channels, adaptability to any TV set, more than 20 exclusive movie channels that will cover Bollywood, Hollywood and regional movies to name a few.

The company has also set up a call centre, which is capable of handling over 50,000 calls per day, and would operate from two locations to enable speedy response to consumer queries. Prior to the launch, Big TV was was being tested by employees of other Reliance ADAG companies. Some of them complained that the STB, sourced from vendors in Korea and Taiwan, gave problems within a week. More on Big TV customer service tomorrow.

Currently, around 7 million households subscribe to DTH service, but the DTH market is estimated to touch 25 million by 2010 with the rural market expected to grow faster than the urban area.

Big TV Facing Big Problems? - Part 1

Big TV Check your Cable ConnectionAs every launch date provided by the media passes by there is still no sign of the commercial availability of Big TV DTH. This made me wonder why would any company not want to disclose something so important as people have been waiting for more than a couple of months now to buy it.

If you recollect that some people have managed to get a Big TV connection under the PCO Scheme and the Employee offer, lets take a look at their feedback and experience of using Big TV.

Big TV Installation:

Big TV InstallationThere has been some good feedback regarding the installation of the service, it seems the Big TV service guys came with a small 7-inch LCD TV and tried getting maximum signal strength for 40 - 45 minutes, once that was done they set up the dish over there. It seems the Big TV dish is bigger in size as compared to Tata Sky and Dish TV.

The cable was inserted through the hole in the wall, and then sealed with silicon adhesive so no insects could go pass through it. The cable is branded with "Reliance Blue Magic" the older brand name that was dropped later on by the company. They are possibly trying to finish their excess stock of hardware that has been branded with "Blue Magic".

Big TV Problems:

Within a week of installation, users started to see that the Set Top Box (STB) began to hang, the remote control could not help and the only option they had was to restart the STB by turning off the power and switching it back on.

Reliance Big Tv Set Top BoxChanging channels is slow, it takes two to three seconds for a channel to change, as more channels are added the whole scrolling through the menu seems to lag. At times there have been problems with the menu breaking up while scrolling through the channels, the list of channels get out of their enclosing box.

With an increasing amount of channels its but obvious that after a point of time the quality of the signal will have to be lowered to accommodate more channels.

Like all DTH services the Big TV service has a problem in the monsoon season, the cloud cover and density manages to disrupt service, India has three to four months of rains, this can not be rectified and exists with all DTH service providers.

In Part 2 of Big Tv Facing Big Problems we will take a look at the Big TV Customer Service, the Customer Complains and the solutions provided by Big Tv.
